Newcastle, 2 October 2018
Slingshot has today announced the cohort for the Newcastle-based ICON Accelerator program for regional businesses. Now in its second year, the program has been designed to support small business and entrepreneurs in the Hunter region and beyond. A collaboration between Slingshot, the University of Newcastle and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, ICON will supercharge the next generation of regional Startups to drive innovation in the local economy.
Slingshot Founder Trent Bagnall said the ICON program will play an important role in driving innovation and commercial outcomes in the Hunter.
“We received over 150 applications this year which represents the healthy state of regional Startups. We are encouraged to see the quality of ideas and businesses improving year on year as regional Startups focus on collaboration with corporates and investors. Members from this year’s cohort come from regional towns like Warren, Caves Beach and Medowie.”
Last year, Slingshot and University of Newcastle were awarded funding under the Australian Government’s $23 million Incubator Support initiative to establish the Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) Regional Accelerator of which Icon is a part.
I2N is expected to create at least 45 jobs in the short term, with more to come as Startups find success domestically and internationally. It will also deliver around $2.0m in investment back into the Hunter economy over two years.
The 6 Startups selected for the 2018 cohort include:
An online employment platform for agriculture matching farm employers with reviewed and rated jobseekers
An AI-driven resume and cover letter builder, automatically generating tailored job application to each job requirement for job seekers in minutes
Australia’s smartest point for blockchain investment and asset class education
Design your custom cake, get instant cost estimates, and automatically request quotes from local independent cake bakers/decorators in your area
Enables senior homeowners to leverage the value of their home for better living whilst also giving investors access to the property market for less
A community of caring vendors who offer practical, useful alternatives
This cohort will participate in a 10-week accelerator with access to tailored training and world class mentoring, and receive a $25,000 seed investment.
The ICON Accelerator will conclude on 19 December in Newcastle with a Demo Day showcasing the cohort’s businesses.
